We may disagree among ourselves at times, but the disagreements are fun to watch, and very educational. But, as noted above, good pictures are critical to giving you an idea of value.
Take heed, sir. That is a very good shop manual to have. But, admire your gun and do not do anything to it other than the recomended cleaning and preservation. You have a very valuable and desirable gun. Here are the 44 Mag picts I hope. Welcome to the Forum mainsul! The five screw revolver looks dirty and could use a major cleaning.
You are cheating yourself out of a good appraisal IMO. I would suggest cleaning it thoroughly and puting some wax on it and then take some better pictures with more light. I think it will clean up better and and will help you appraisal. I tend to agree with Mike in backing in to a value. This is advice I give most people when they are seeking a value on something that less than perfect. I believe he overvalued the grips and box by a bit.
There is actual musuem grade gun waxes, but JPW will suffice for your purposes. Before I make a guess on value I have two questions: 1. What kind of latch does the box have take a pic 2. Does the box to the gun white grease pencil on the bottom There were not many guns shipped inmaking it reasonably desirable, but most collectors are looking for higher condition specimens, and the guy looking for a vintage shooter is usually not willing to fork out big bucks.
Last edited by 29aholic; at PM. I like indoors on bright sunny day, and a well lit spot near a window. After a coupla dozen shots, I occasionally get one that looks pretty good! I am not a 44 mag guy -- yet anyway! I think 4" bbls sell for more than longer bbls, tho.
Yours is a very low serial, has cokes, and the reworked box.
Snapped right up by one of our professional dealer members. The better pix, cleaning, and wax is good advice. For starters, pictured below is what a correct set should look like Wow - thanks for the picture of the tools. I thought that I did not have the original screwdriver but after looking at your Picture of a complete set I looked through all the cleaning supplies I inherited and realized I have the knurled screwdriver and possibly the original cleaning tools. Thats too bad - Mine is ed even lower than Elmers so I was hoping it was one of the first 5 made.
I will try and get more pictures of the latch and tools and post today. Main Elmer had a lot of 44's over the years. Gun 4 Fun. For some good reading on the first. I like guns that are worn as it shows that it was actually used for what it was intended for.
I agree that a good cleaning is necessary, but other than that I would leave it as is. Send for a letter for the gun. I have an early manufacture 5 screw pre 29 that I have carried, and still do carry, when I am out hiking or camping.
August 44 Magnum. It took me longer to locate an August shipped 44 Magnum than just about any of the rest in my collection. Nice find and it appears you have the original box. The early box had a push button latch and a lighter blue pebblegrain finish cover. Regards Chuck. After thinking on this for a bit I am going to agree with Chuck on value Terms of Service. All times are GMT The time now is PM. User Name. Remember Me? Thread Tools. I now know that I have a Pre-Model 29. Serial S xxx. I was ly told that my serial is extremely close to Elmer Keiths. I would consider the gun in real good shape - but not excellent.
I do have the original case but it appears the inside has been modified - I dont think I have the original cleaning rod or screwdriver. How do I go about getting this revolver appraised? We do have a Gun show here in Virginia this weekend but I don't know if I will have time to make it down to it.
